Joyous Diwali

In madurai, we celebrate Diwali at 'Mathichiam' where our house was located. My sister and my cousin , myself will get crackers two days before Diwali from "Pandian co-op supermarket " @ Thallakulam. Before that we make a list of crackers to be purchased. usually my sister wants 'not-so-loud' crackers and my cousin goes for very louded ones. I prefer moderate ones. After getting it, we will place it in a 'cholagu' - a wooden crate for 'sun-bathing' the crackers so that the crackers goes loud. Otherwise if they go 'bussu', we would get insulted in front of our friends on that diwali day.
As far as new dresses are concerned, we go with our Mom to Hajee Moosa or May flower or similar show rooms at madurai meenakshi temple areas mostly on the western side entrance "mela kobura vasal". She will take us to textile showrooms selecting colors in such a way that there were no simislar shirts or pants with us. My Mom had a habit of cutting pictures from magazines, newspapersetc., and would ask the salesmen to get the same color same material within HER budget. It is a surprise that those sales people didn't get mad and they would politely show all materials available with them. After that she will go to 'Raja Rani' tailor to stitch dresses for my sister and 'Golden' Tailor as they are seen in magazines worn by Models!.
Then she will go 'Ananda Silver Stores' to give eversilver gifts to friends and relatives, Then, she will go to Nagaikadai theru for jewels, mostly for ear-lobes and kolusu sets for my sister. If it is for Mom she will not purchase a ready-made-one instead will go 'Sonai Asari' to make an exclusive one of her choice.
The sweets and savories preparation will take three days of prior to Diwali, particularly for murukku, one full day is needed.
As there were no mobiles or emails or landlines that day, we will send Diwali vazhthu Attaigal [ greetings cards] purchased for 5 to 10 rupees and send them to chithi, mama, aaya and other friends. In every greetings card, we all three put our signatures and write simple things like "anbulla murali mamavukku, Diwali vazhthugal" like that. They were so simple , but served purpose in conveying our love. Also we receive similar ones from them also.
On that diwali day , we wake up at early morning hours like 4.30 or 5.00 am, get oil-bathed, adorned with simple jewels and new dresses. After the early morning pooja, we will start burning crackers from 6.00 am onwards, me starting with a 200-wala cracker. Then we will take break- fast with Hot Idly, sambar, vada and kesari. After that we will visit our friends home with a plate full of Diwali sweets and often return with money gifts of Rs.10 or 20, which will go to our hundials. As there were no satellite channels then, we would watch Doordharshan programes like Salaman paapaiya pattimandram, new release film songs etc.,.And then again to burn crackers like puppet guns and cheeni vedi packets and all.
In the Evening hours of Diwali we will again start with changu chakkarams, busvanams and kambi mathappus, rail mathappus and rarely anugundus till 9.00pm.
My Dad usually lit a kerosene lamp or big candle for fire. he will keep a close watch on us that we are safe throughout the day.
